Patrick Walker, one of our mediators, introduced us to the Charity and spends every Friday volunteering. Below he discusses what it means to him.
Mediation brings with it enormous job satisfaction so why is it I choose to spend my Fridays chopping carrots, making custard and serving 120 hot meals in a cheerful but crowded sub-terranean canteen? St George’s Crypt not only provides food and shelter to homeless people, but through its Growing Rooms project helps many back to employment and housing within the community. The programme has a rigorous zero tolerance of drugs and alcohol and seeing those addicted and adrift turn the corner and press on wIth enthusiasm but no complacency is enough to brighten the most grey of November days. Sometimes colleagues ask why I don’t do another mediation and donate the proceeds but after nearly two years at the Crypt I believe personal contact is crucial. It also makes it easier for me to ask others for help, like the local butcher who donates large quantities of high quality meat products and the local farm that gives valuable rapeseed oil 80 litres at a time! The food donations can vary and we have to be flexible in the kitchen, but it is all gratefully received and put to good use. The Crypt is also also looking for clothing including underwear and socks. Maybe you know someone with connections in farming or the food or clothing trades, or maybe you would just like to help somebody slay the dragon, get off the street, regain their self-confidence and with luck, a job and a home.
